"Go and Make Disciples, Matthew 28:19" together with Geneseo UMC at Long Point Park on September 9th, 2018. Although already “recycled” once on 09/06/20, this service foreshadows our newest pastor, Rev. Keith Griswold (of Geneseo, at the time!) sharing the message with Pastor Natalie Bowerman. Our combined choirs and congregations are joined together in a memorable time of worship and picnic fellowship.
“A Family Divided” with Kim Ferrel and Carin Farmer from 08/14/16. Ironically, the final time our dynamic pastoral duo teamed up (though nothing to do with the sermon title) as Kim moves on to another charge by the following summer. An examination of a very difficult scriptural passage; Jesus challenged his disciples, and he challenges us! But sometimes painful division is a good thing as it forces us to think hard and to make difficult choices.
“Thy Word is a Lamp” with Kim and Carin from the 08/11/13 combined tent service. Psalm 119 is the longest psalm in the Bible with 176 verses. Among (many) other things, this psalm tells us that God’s light is a lamp located down by our feet, and not positioned higher above to illuminate more than a step or two ahead in the darkness. We may wish that His light was more like a floodlight in our lives sometimes, but need to have faith that God’s Word is there to guide us forward a step at a time.
“Worshiping in God’s Creation” with Pastors Kim and Carin from the 08/12/12 tent service. Have you ever received a gold medal? What do you think of as “your personal best” dedicated toward the Glory of God? What messages do you hear that invite you to give God your best? May we always continue to hear this call in our times of activity, and times of silence…
“Lemons or Lemonade?” from the 08/14/11 outdoor combined service with Pastors Kim Ferrel and Carin Farmer. Bad things happen in life. How do we choose to respond to our difficult situations? Being bitter or grateful covers a wide range of options, and choices. But God can always make lemonade for us out of our personal lemons. We just need to look for opportunities
“God’s Toy Box: Lite Bright” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman from 11/25/18. The way we highlight what is important in our lives can be simple and straightforward. But following Jesus is complex! His light only shines through us to others from those areas where we place “our emitters.” Alone, we are each a tiny little peg. But together, we can form big pictures that are a mighty illustration of God’s being in the world.
“God’s Toy Box: The Rocking Horse” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman from 11/18/18. Columnist Erma Bombeck once wrote, “Worry is like a rocking chair; it gives you something to do, but never gets you anywhere.” A rocking horse is like that, it keeps us busy but when we get off we haven’t really moved. We need to be mindful when we serve, to making progress. Worry is the biggest obstacle to moving forward. (Natalie lists quite a few common sources of worry back in 2018. You can no doubt make note of a few new ones, since!) We need to do what we are able to, and trust that God can and will do the rest for us.
“God’s Toy Box: Mr Potato Head” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman from 11/11/18. This toy above all others can help display our most “fun-damental” creative choices. What decisions do we make in presenting ourselves to others? Some of us have more to choose from based upon resources available, and some choices can be intentionally deceptive. We need to be careful making judgments of others based upon appearances, which are always on the outside. In the end, it is what is on the inside that shows who we really are.
“God’s Toy Box: Slinky Dog” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman from 10/21/18. This toy from the past is most interesting in the way if moves. It stretches out and then reconnects, and is designed to be pulled from in front, and not pushed from behind. Jesus is our head, and goes out ahead of us to lead the way. Each of us is an individual link, our positions changing with circumstances. But no matter how far behind, we can’t get separated. And we always need to help assist those behind us.
“God’s Toy Box, Part 1: Legos” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman from 10/14/18. First in a series adapted from “Toy Box Leadership.” Though written in a totally secular style, there are many lessons in the book that can be applied to building strong congregations. Many of the skills we’ve learned were first encountered through play situations, alone of with others. Legos help illustrate that we can build strongest and highest toward God through our connections with others. The church grows through a structure that invites others to join with us in its building.
“Witnessing” with Pastor DJ Robinson from 05/21/17. How do we speak up and share our ways of believing with others, when there are so many other interpretations and approaches to life? We need to first live our beliefs in order to share them, seek to know God better in order to explain Him, and try to understand what others believe and why; to “meet them where they are.” The Gospel of Christ must be articulated in today’s language in order to be shared in our current reality.
“Leading Causes of Life” with Pastor Kim Ferrel from 09/11/16. On this day of remembrance of an overwhelming national tragedy, it is perhaps easy to think sometimes that death is winning. But the choice is always before us to choose life. We need to focus on our connections with each other, and our connectedness with (and through) God. We are meant to lift each other up. How are we reminded of this? What are our opportunities now to do so?
“War, What is it Good For?” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman from 09/02/18. Over the course of our history, the United States has been involved in armed conflict about every 20 years! We’ve all been shaped by wars in our lifetimes. Yet, “War is incompatible with the teachings of Jesus.” As United Methodists we understand the subject is complicated and it is sometimes better to fight against injustice and tyranny. Our Book of Discipline and Book of Resolution specify clear limitations.
“Loving Ministry” with Pastor Mary Martin from 02/08/15. Who was the first “deacon” in our Christian tradition, through representing Jesus’ teachings with others? “Service” is the key way we express those teachings. We cure modern-day sickness by promoting wholeness through Jesus. Even a gentle touch can be a powerful expression and means of outreach to others.
“Trusting in the Reality of God” with Pastor Marvin Krieger from 02/17/19. While not a “Lazarus Story”, Marvin’s message shares some of the same dynamics with trust issues we might have with God. Would you give up everything to follow Jesus, as the Disciples did? We tend to give of our own accord, but must sacrifice more, being especially proactive in issues of social justice as part of sharing Jesus’ love with others.
“God’s Toy Box, Part 4! The Yo-Yo” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman from 11-04-18. Natalie draws parallels between meaning found in the Lazarus story and the dynamic function of a toy yo-yo. Life is a constant series of ups and downs, but Jesus gave us a permanent connection with God, a thread that can never break. For every fall, a rising up again, for every death, a resurrection...
“Living Our Baptismal Calling: Believe” with Pastor DJ Robinson from 04/02/17. Another take on the Lazarus story, with social, cultural, and spiritual ramifications of the event portrayed through DJ’s descriptive narrative. This story illustrates bringing hopelessness back to life. We need to take the shackles off our own thinking… “Unshackle it, and live!”
“Come Out” with Pastor Kim Ferrel from 04/06/14. “If you had been here…” Sometimes we want God to swoop in and fix things for us. Mary and Martha were feeling let-down and abandoned by Jesus when their brother Lazarus died. But when life feel like death to us, resurrection will come! We find hope again in the face of hopelessness, and with God working through each of us, help to “unbind” others from despair and limitations.
“The Well” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman from 04/07/19. An unusually personal first-hand account of challenges encountered during a difficult maternity leave, interviewing for Commissioning in the UMC, being reassigned to a new district conference, packing to move, preparing for an open house, transitioning school districts, and preparing to say goodbye to a beloved congregation. Where does one find strength in such times?
“Where Do Broken Hearts Go?” with Pastor Mia Richardson from 03/15/20. We’ve all faced some measure of heartbreak at one time or another. Where do we find help, where do we go? We need to “go to the well” alone or together to get through the immediate challenges we face, and whatever is to come. (This was the final in-church worship gathering prior to pandemic restrictions and an unknown future facing us at that time!)
“My Name is Mary Magdalene” with “Mary Magdalene” from 04/21/19. In this special Easter presentation, Pastor Natalie Bowerman shares a first-person narrative that recounts the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion and those that followed, from the perspective of someone very close to him... a beloved member of the lowly and downtrodden whom Jesus came to save and offer new, and everlasting life!
“Hosanna!” with Kim Ferrel from 03/29/15. Our typically festive celebration of Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week, a title which sounds wonderful in itself, but we know what is to come. It is a preparation for the reality of being a Christian then, and even now! “It takes courage to follow Jesus.” “This week we will remember again, all the events.” “It is a difficult story, the story of our salvation.” With lots of Palm Sunday musical celebration.
“God’s Love- How Deep and How Wide?” with Pastor Mary Martin from 03/17/19. “Looking for clarity in scripture” is forefront in Mary’s approach to studying Biblical passages. She reads to us Philippians 3:17– 4:1 from a modern translation couched in today’s vernacular, and illustrates that 2000 years have not diminished the pointed relevance of this message. If anything, the warnings and admonitions are perhaps even more apropos today! Also, music from the Dolci Venti instrumental group.
“Acceptance” with Pastor DJ Robinson from 03/12/17. Have you ever been in a place where someone didn’t accept you? Never-the-less, each of us is fully accepted by God! But we need to accept this gift which is freely given to us. Acceptance of a gift is a gift, and as God blesses us, we are a blessing of God to others. (Plus, DJ instructions on how to achieve a “Holy Ghost spiral!”)
“God Calls Us” with Pastor Kim Ferrel from 03/30/14. In order to fulfill our individual calling, we need to know our own unique identity. The same holds true for our church body, as a whole. We need to identify its strengths to most effectively minister to each other, and outside our congregation. Let’s figure out how to best celebrate our calling! (Plus lots of 4th Sunday hymn singing!)
“Thirsting for God” with Pastor Mary Martin from 03/24/19. What are we thirsty for? Do we sometimes demand our own way? Self-righteous anger can make us feel superior and more powerful, and able to rise above the perceived shortcomings of others. Biblical repentance is God’s way to bridge divides and be able to see things as others do; to empower us to share a common perspective.
“Are You Able” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman from 01/14/18. The original title of the famous hymn, “Are Ye Able?” was “Challenge.” Natalie explores this song both in terms of history, and personal associations in her ministry. She then adapts the title to the challenges of hearing God speak to us through the story of Samuel and Eli. Are we able to hear the voice of God calling to us?
“Renounce” with Pastor DJ Robinson from 03/05/17. DJ explores the story of the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness. What are our wilderness experiences, both physical and spiritual? How do we “prove” the power of Jesus to others (and sometimes, to ourselves?) We can’t resist the Devil on our own; we need The Word resonating inside of us to equip us for all of life’s daily challenges.
“Second Chances” with Pastor Mary Martin from 01/25/15. More fish (!) with Jonah and the whale… A famous Biblical story of repentance and turning away from bad lifestyle choices. Do we also live in a Nineveh environment today? What can we learn about transforming our own questionable situations into new possibilities?
“Fishing for People” with Pastor Kim Ferrel from 01/22/12. What qualities are unique to people who enjoy fishing, either as a hobby or a profession? What “a lure” caused a small number of fisherman to abandon their nets and follow Jesus as disciples? What are the hooks that inspire you to be a modern-day disciple of God?
“A Whole Lotta...” with Pastor DJ Robinson from 02/05/15. DJ breaks down the spiritual concept of “Abundance” and asks, “What are you full of?” Not always good things, perhaps, but no matter how difficult and hopeless the world seems today, God will fill us with the best if we allow Him to. Also, the Geneseo UMC Choir is with us! (No bulletin.)
“Keep Moving” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman from 02/04/18. Mother Teresa often expressed personal doubts in private writings about her relationship with God. This makes her humanity all the more relatable to us. We may sometimes feel distanced from God. Natalie advises that we just need to keep moving forward in love and service to others, to find our way back to Him.
“Filled with the Power of the Spirit” with Pastor Marvin Krieger from 01/27/19. God has given spiritual gifts, special gifts to each of us. How do we share our unique gifts with each other? In a world that is so divided, we need to share our differences in ways that unite us, instead of separating us. The Spirit makes each of us an individual, and the Spirit can make all of us a whole.
“God is Calling” with Pastor Mary Martin from 01/18/15. Mary shares stories of several notable figures in scripture. She explains, “The Biblical way is to tell a story, and to invite us into that story, to live life in a similar way.” “We come to see our story in God.” Whose modern-day stories might also serve to inspire us? What do our stories tell?
“Come and See” with Pastor Kim Ferrel from 01/15/12. How do you respond to personal invitations? How do we invite others to follow? When God invites us to be in a relationship with Jesus, we need only to open ourselves to His Word to channel His power. Do we freely allow God to make us into something better?
“Revealed” with Pastor DJ Robinson from 01/01/17. “Epiphany” means “to be revealed.” This is our spiritual time of year to reflect on what has been, and what we have learned. What has been revealed in your life that helps to prepare and strengthen for what is to come?
“Where Do We Go From Here?” with Pastor Mia Richardson from 12/29/19. Life goes on, after Christmas. But what kind of life is important to us? Each of us is in a different place, but we all continue on “the Journey to Bethlehem” Mia shared during the season, even though it is now passed.
“Stars! Angels! Shepherds! Kings! Our Children’s Christmas presentation from 12/11/16. “A Christmas musical told through the eyes of stars, angels, shepherds, and kings.” Lots of enthusiastic music!
“Music and Inspiration” from 12/18/16 with Mitzie Collins, Glennda Dove, and Roxanne Ziegler. Our faithful Advent trio plays beautiful Christmas selections interspersed with inspirational readings by members of our congregation.
“Es Ist Ein Ros’ Entsprungen” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman from 12/09/18. “A Rose has Sprung” and it is a time of miracles as we enter the Christmas season. Natalie shares the history of the beloved song, “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming” and how its past has added to the power of the words, as well as its relevancy for us today.
“The Power of Fellowship” with Pastor DJ Robinson from 05/07/17. It is one thing to have fellowship within a group, but many of those outside also want to be part of something that has a greater purpose. We find solidarity in love, even in the face of adversity. How do we encourage others to join us, united and working together for something larger than ourselves?
“Christ the King” with Pastor Hector Rivera from 11/20/16. Christ has established a Kingdom of God for us. Seek this Kingdom, and you will receive the blessings of God. God always takes care of His people. We may not always understand His workings, but He will bring us everything that we need.
“Perfect Love Casts Out Fear” with Pastor Kim Ferrel from 10/11/15. Do you ever feel lost? How do we react when we are unable to find our way? The more fearful we become, the more likely we are to hurt others. We do not have to feel afraid if we trust in God’s perfect love. “Faith is not the absence of fear, but the courage to walk through it.”
“The Lord’s Prayer” with members of The Prayer Team from 11/12/17. Laity Sunday is celebrated with members of our Prayer Team discussing a deeper understanding of this most famous Christian prayer, in order to deepen our understanding of the process and power of all prayer to God.
“This, and Not That” with Pastor DJ Robinson from 02/12/17. As in Moses’ time, the choice to follow a spiritual or political leader does not absolve us from the individual responsibility to chart our own path. How do we choose “this path” and not “that one” in making choices? How we respond to God’s directives is up to each of us.
“A Drink of Water” with Advance Lay Servant David Jacobus from 10/27/19. How long can a single drink of water support us? David stresses that we need regular and ongoing spiritual refreshment in order to sustain us through our daily challenges. What kind of behaviors satisfy this need? Plus, a return of former accompanist Michael Burke and special music with the choir.
“Stone Soup” with Pastor Mia Richardson from 11/10/19. Pastor Mia retells the classic story of “Stone Soup” and then uses select scriptural passages related to stones and rocks to create her own special mix of Biblical nourishment containing hope and inspiration for all.
“Living in the World” with Pastor Kim Ferrel from 10/06/13. How are we to be Christian in this world? God gives us courage to live in the world but not of the world, and Spirit strengthens us to overcome all things. (With a prayerful 2013 approach to handling 2021+ political divisiveness!) Plus a special Communion-in-the-round observance with the choir.
“Hold On” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman on 10/01/17. We often see what we expect to see, and believe what we are accustomed to believing. Perhaps it is easier for many, to see a world without God when tragedy strikes or challenges continue unabated. How do we see God among us, especially when the world is full of misfortune?
“Rise and Shine” with Pastor DJ Robinson from 02/26/17. DJ compares a harrowing travel experience in the middle of the night with our spiritual “Voice of Navigation” helping us know where to turn, giving us insight into where we are, and how to choose the path forward. DJ urges everyone to “Turn on your high beams so that people can see the light of God in you!”
“In a Light, Radiant Cloud” with Pastor Mary Martin on 02/15/15. A transfiguration sermon inspired by a snowy mountain. Mountaintop experiences are special because we live our ordinary lives in the valleys, ever aspiring to climb higher to be closer to God. But if we trust God enough, He will help us get to the top!
“Blown On, Blown Out” with Pastor Kim Ferrel on 06/12/11, Pentecost Sunday. God’s power is displayed in the rushing wind through the Holy Spirit. A storm from afar can lead to a storm within! The Holy Spirit calls us out. What is God calling us to do amidst the storms of today?
“Number One Arrow” with Don Mastin on 09/08/13. Bow hunters pre-test their arrows for accuracy in flight, and attempt to correct and then rate them by the standard of their best one. Don offers analogies from a passionate hunter on becoming a better Christian in life. We need to become the very best arrow for God we can be, true and reliable!
“Called to be Witnesses” with Dr. Laurie Tiberi on 06/09/19. How can we share our views with others about God, with confidence and assurance that our messages are effective and being received? It starts with careful listening and awareness of others’ needs, and help from the Holy Spirit.
“An Interview with Accompanist Mark Brennan” from 08/21/16. Mark shares some of his musical talent with us through performance, and dialogue including what brought him to AUMC. (No bulletin.)
“Does God Work on Sunday?” with Paul Brown on 09/14/14. If we are created in God’s image, that image has changed throughout history as we’ve become ever more knowledgeable and aware of our greater reality. We are always trying to “reach for God” based upon our current ability to comprehend His creation. Paul then concludes his message with an original “musical reach for God.”
“A Message from Carin and Natalie” with Pastors Carin Farmer and Natalie Bowerman from the combined outdoor service on 8/13/17. How often do we let our fears get the best of us, keeping us from seeing the living Jesus offering an outstretched hand, or causing us to insist on further assurance before we accept God’s help? What motivates us to trust, to follow, to get back on track with God?
“Caring for Mosquitoes” with Pastor Kim Ferrel on 7/22/12. After reading an article, “A World Without Mosquitoes” Kim googled “Benefit of Mosquitoes” and ultimately decides that despite how we feel about them, God must care for mosquitoes! How do we deal with circumstances in life wherein God seems to show concern and support for our “adversaries” (be they insect or human?)
“God’s Not Done” with Pastor Mia Richardson from 09/15/19. From times of joy in our lives to times of sorrow, God is always with us. The work of Jesus Christ is continuing in God’s creation and He is going to complete His transforming work in each of us. But it takes all of us to share The Good News with others!
“EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED” was the very appropriate first message delivered by Pastor DJ Robinson during her initial Sunday with us on 11/27/16. We often consider an event a failure in our lives if our personal expectations are not met. DJ suggests we need to start expecting less based upon our own desires, and open ourselves to expecting more through God’s interaction in our lives.
“Aliens” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman on 09/16/18. Galileo was charged with heresy by the Catholic Church for proposing that the earth was not the physical center of God’s universe! Can modern Christianity handle a concept of “Disclosure?” Who are we to limit God’s possibilities? Our understanding of God might grow ever larger with an expanding perspective of our earthly reality.
“In the Darkness, Part 2” with Pastor Kim Ferrel on 07/06/14. Reflecting on the enabling and empowering aspects of darkness which can refocus our perceptions such that we see things in ways they cannot be seen when surrounded by light. Plus, Bill and Bob Lewis join us with their annual twin trombone tribute to the 4th and the official beginning of summer!
“In the Darkness” with Pastor Kim Ferrel on 06/29/14. “Why, God… Why?” Where is God in the darkness? Who do we turn to when God seems so far away? Reflecting on some of the limiting and frightful aspects of emotional darkness that can be all-too-familiar to us.

Assisting in this special worship program are Sunday School staff Sue Moses, Lisa Kay Kuchar, and Diane Amey, along with various members of the congregation helping celebrate our wonderful youth!!
“John 3:16” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman on 05/05/19. Probably the very favorite Bible verse of many and the most often shared reference. Natalie explores the cultural history and popularity of this verse, as well as its meaning in light of the verses which precede it. She notes that a favorite verse is one that speaks loudest to each of us, but that could change meaningfully with circumstances.
“Connecting with Community Services” with guest speakers, from 03/09/14. Barb Herman speaks on the Avon Chamber of Commerce, Christine Ryan on the Avon Food Pantry, and Tom Bartilini on the Lions Club and other service organizations. “We are custodians of your money and your trust.”
”Faith-filled Healing” with Pastor Mary Martin on 02/01/15. We rely on the medical community for healing, yet we need God to make our healing a full reality. We all heal through God in different ways; how do you need to be healed? How is God healing us today? The Geneseo UMC choir joins us.
“Marks of the Church” with Pastor Kim Ferrel on 05/11/14. The power of The Holy Spirit brought the first church together in Christ. What defined those early Christians to unite them? What brings us together? In what ways can we share in The Holy Spirit and serve like the early church?
“The Strength of a Mother” with Pastor DJ Robinson on 05/14/17. No explanation necessary!
“Women in the Church” with Pastors Natalie Bowerman and Emily Huyge on 05/19/19. Natalie and her fellow seminary friend, “Em” share perspectives on what it is like to be a woman in the ministry in today’s world. (From Natalie’s series inspired by questions asked by her congregation)

“Jesus: Crucified and Risen” with Pastor Kim Ferrel on 07/10/16. What do those words mean to you? Kim offers a “July perspective” on an “April event.” What did the crucifixion and resurrection mean within the big picture of our faith? God invites us to also make a difference; how do we respond?
“What Are You Looking For?” with Pastor Natalie Bowerman on 04/01/18. Last in a series adapted from the book, “Questions God Asks of Us.” How did those around Jesus respond following his crucifixion? What are you looking for this day? Natalie responds “uninterrupted sleep” and then goes on to share more serious answers, and guidelines to help all of us think this through.
“Through Death to Life: Humility & Passion” with Pastor DJ Robinson on 04/09/17. How did people in Jesus’s time react when they thought he had let them down? How do others react, when they think the same of us? And how do we react when others don’t live up to our expectations?
“The Resurrection and the Life… do you believe?” with Pastor Kim Ferrel on 04/10/11. Jesus asks us to complete what he has begun. Life gives us opportunities to ask difficult questions, and to be able to believe without seeing first-hand. (The second radio program recorded, back in 2011!)

“The Other Cheek… and then?” with Lay Leader, Paul Brown. Originally broadcast 06/26/16. “Turning the other cheek” is a beautiful Christian sentiment, but how do we actually do this in the real world? Paul offers a challenging example from his personal life of how difficult this can be, and yet how he believes it to be possible.
“Confronting Our Culture” with Mary Martin. Originally broadcast 03/08/15. We are shaped and influenced every day by our culture, whether or not we want to be. How do we maintain balance in our lives amid all the competing influences, and stay true to our Christian beliefs?
